Only a crazy artist’s mind could have conjured up a creature with wings, feathers, scales, tails, unicorn horn, wormy eyes, claws of—perhaps—a dragon, maybe a turtle shell, and a duck’s tail. But this is not unusual in the art of the fantastical world or folklore. Many cultures have animals that are made up of multiple species and usually combined with completely fantastical creatures such as unicorns, giant serpents and dragons. Very soon after the literal depiction of animals in cave paintings, artists began to superimpose human characteristics onto animals and vice versa.
